Planting Information
Timing: Plant after the last frost when soil temperatures reach 60°F. Store tubers in a cool, dry, dark place until planting. Plant in a pot and keep indoors under lights if started early.
Location: Select a sunny, well-drained spot.
Planting Depth: Loosen soil about 1’ deep. Position the tuber with the top no more than 1-2” beneath the soil surface.
Watering: Water well at planting, then do not water again until sprouts emerge to prevent rot.
Soil Care: Enhance with compost and an all-purpose fertilizer for optimal growth.
Growing Tips
Pinching: Removing the growing tip after 3-4 sets of leaves encourages more blooms but delays flowering by a few weeks.
Support: Stake tall plants to keep stems upright and prevent breakage.
Deadheading: Removing spent blooms promotes continuous flowering.
Overwintering
End of Season Care: Let plants grow until the first frost. As temperatures drop, stems and flowers will die back, and the tuber will begin to harden.
Lifting & Storage for areas where there are freezing temperatures Zones 3-7:
After the first frost, allow tubers to harden for 1-2 weeks before lifting.
Do not let tubers freeze. Shake off excess soil and dry for 24-48 hours out of direct sunlight.
Store at 40-50°F in slightly moistened vermiculite or similar material.
